Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters (Friends) was established in 2017 as a citizen conservation nonprofit working to preserve and protect the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality and distinctive cultural resources of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and surrounding communities for the inspiration and enjoyment of all generations. In partnership with the National Park Service, Friends provides a direct way for the public to participate in the continuing stewardship of Maine’s newest park by providing a measure of excellence that can reach beyond NPS management and funding. We raise funds in support of the monument, defend it against threats, mobilize volunteers for site projects, lobby legislatures and agencies, and represent users in the betterment of monument operations.
The Operations and Special Projects Coordinator works as part of a small, but dynamic team of staff and volunteers to ensure organizational effectiveness by providing administrative, logistical, and project support. The Operations and Special Projects Coordinator is responsible for office duties, data management, and ongoing communications and development projects, as well as creating, implementing, and managing organizational, membership, and program materials and protocols.
This position works under the supervision of FKWW’s Executive Director.
Strong commitment to public lands and the natural, recreational and cultural features of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Strong work ethic and willingness to work evenings and weekends when projects demand it.
Familiarity with data and administrative management.
Core Duties and Responsibilities of the Operations Manager
Develop knowledge and understanding of Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and surrounding communities.
Meticulously maintain and manage information system of members, volunteers, donors, administrative records, and other information.
Provide on-going front-office administrative tasks such as electronic and physical file maintenance, answering the telephone, monitoring mail, assisting with correspondence and mailings, monitoring supplies, greeting guests and volunteers, and problem solving.
Perform basic bookkeeping and manage annual reporting for the organization.
Assist in managing website content, e-communications, and social media strategy.
Coordinate activities including meetings, information gathering, volunteer projects, mailings, and other outreach.
Assist in execution of fundraising and member activities, including written and electronic appeals, special events, and other development activities.
Work with the Executive Director and other staff in creating and implementing other communications materials, including writing and editing.
Fulfill other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.
Location and Travel
A Friends’ administrative office is being established in Portland, however travel to the Katahdin region and other locations within Maine is an occasional requirement of this job, and applicants must maintain a reliable car and valid driver’s license.
Hours and Benefits
Health and earned-time benefits are offered to all Friends’ employees. This position is intended to be full-time, however flexible work hours are possible, including the option of starting as part-time and moving to full-time at a later date. We aim to have our Operations and Special Projects Coordinator start as early as February 2018.
