The incredible biodiversity of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is perhaps rivaled by the wide range of recreational and interpretive opportunities there. There’s hiking on the International Appalachian Trail, world-class paddling on three rivers, mountain biking, birdwatching for over 150 avian species, walks to unique ecological and geological wonders, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling in the parcels east of the East Branch, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, unmatched views of Katahdin, and stargazing beneath the darkest skies East of the Mississippi River. During your trip, you’ll be following in the footsteps of the First Peoples, Henry David Thoreau, Teddy Roosevelt, Frederic Edwin Church, Elizabeth Oakes Smith, and many more.
