New Moon Teachings

Each new moon from February 2021 to January 2022, a Wabanaki Advisory Board partnered with Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters to present webinars called New Moon Teachings. Topics on Wabanaki history and culture included place names, basket making, music, the land claims, activism, and more.

New Moon Teachings was a starting point for Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters’ commitment to centering Wabanaki perspectives in shaping narratives about the landscape of Katahdin Woods & Waters and the people, lands, and waters connected to it.

This resource page is presented as a hub for continued learning, engagement, and action in support of Wabanaki peoples from Penobscot Nation, the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Mi’kmaq Nation, and Passamaquoddy at Sipayik and Motahkmukik.

It is critical for settlers who continue to learn, engage, and act to be mindful of the source of materials and organizations. For centuries and to this day, settlers have produced and continue to produce content about Indigenous peoples using extractive methods.

When we are careful about what knowledge we engage with, we are taking an active role in pushing back against the appropriation and misuse of Intellectual and Cultural Property from the Wabanaki Nations. We urge you to engage with materials produced or curated by Wabanaki nations, Wabanaki-led organizations, and Wabanaki people.
