Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is open year-round. There is no fee to enter!

A friendly reminder before your visit: our services are limited. We are currently a park in progress and encourage visitors to bring a map and download the NPS APP before visiting.

Park North Entrance

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument North Entrance is reached by turning left on New River Road from Maine Route 159/Grand Lake Road. This entrance is typically open to wheeled vehicle traffic from late May-late October. Visitors looking to ski or snowshoe in the winter can park at the North Gate parking area to access winter trails.

Park South Entrance and Katahdin Loop Road

The south entrance to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is reached via Maine Route 11 and Swift Brook Road. This entrance is typically open to wheeled vehicle traffic from late May-late October. Swift Brook Road is a private logging road. Two gates across this private logging road leading into the monument are managed by a neighboring timber company. The timber company determines when road conditions are appropriate to open the gates for the summer season.

Fall and spring roads information

Roads may be closed from mid-November to late May. Visit the Current Conditions page for a listing of current road closures.

  • From Mid-November to late May, the North Entrance and Katahdin Loop Road are closed to wheeled vehicles.
  • Two gates on the Swift Brook Road leading to the southern sections of the monument are managed by a neighboring timber company and may be closed to wheeled vehicles as well from mid-November to late May.
 

Visitor Services

Where can I find an NPS Ranger? We currently don’t have a NPS visitor’s center, but you can find a ranger at one of our Contact Stations located below.

Lumberman’s Museum

National Park Service staff are tabled here to provide information and trip-planning assistance from a desk located inside. Maps and brochures are available. The Lumbermen's Museum is open from 10 am-4 pm daily from early July to mid-October each year. The hours of operations change seasonally. Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays with the exception of the following holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day. The museum is typically closed for the winter starting October to the end of May. Please check operating hours by calling 207.528.2650

NPS Passport Stamps

National Park Passport Stamps can be obtained at Shin Pond Village (1489 Shin Pond Road Mt. Chase, ME), as well as at the National Park Service contact station listed under the Visitor Centers section.
