PATTEN, Maine -- National Park Service (NPS) Regional Director Gay Vietzke has named Sheldon “Mark” Wimmer as the new superintendent of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. He begins his new assignment on January 2.“Mark is an experienced and thoughtful manager who has worked on a broad range of land management issues,” said Regional Director Gay Vietzke. “He has experience working through complex issues with stakeholders and listening to various points of view to find common ground and reach solutions."
“When I arrived at Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, I was able to direct the redevelopment of aging infrastructure and add needed public facilities to improve the visitor experience,” said Wimmer. “I believe that I can make a similar difference at Katahdin Woods and Waters. I have a wide variety of experience in working collaboratively with tribes, intergovernmental groups, and visitors to manage our public lands for future generations to enjoy.”
Wimmer comes to the NPS from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in St. George, Utah. He is presently serving as the monument manager for the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, where he supervised both NPS and BLM employees. Mark has served as Acting Superintendent of the national monument on two occasions, in 2017 and again in 2019-20. Before that, he served as a planning and environmental coordinator for the BLM National Transmission Support Team. His education includes an undergraduate degree in range and wildlife resources with a minor in zoology and a masters in range science with a professional certificate in project management. Mark and his family are excited to relocate to the Maine woods. They enjoy birding, family history, museums, storytelling, and the great outdoors.
